The pink Monopoly properties are an interesting bunch. They might not be your first choice, but will serve nicely if you ever need them. Who knows? They might even win you the game.

This article discusses more about the pink Monopoly properties and strategies to optimize their use.

What are the Pink (Magenta) Monopoly Properties?

These are the properties found on the first intersection on the second row of properties. It is in the middle of the orange and light blue properties. They are usually 3 in number.

The names of the properties differ depending on the Monopoly editions you’re playing. Buying the pink Monopoly properties is super cheap.

Pink Monopoly Properties in the US, UK, and Canada Editions

There are so many Monopoly editions. So, we’re sticking with just three popular editions right now. Here’s a table showing the orange properties in the various countries.

USUKCanada
St. Charles PlacePall MallKelowna, BC
States AvenueWhite HallNorth Bay
Virginia AvenueNorthumberland AvenueSt. John’s

As you can see, the names are different in these three editions. To simplify things, we’ll be using the names in the UK edition throughout this article.

Here are the prices of each property space.

Monopoly SpaceProperty Price
Pall Mall$140
White Hall$140
Northumberland$160

One of the common themes in Monopoly is that the 3rd property is usually higher than the rest. This is also true in this case. This might be down to the higher rent in the 3rd property.

Rent Prices of the Pink Monopoly Properties

The rent prices will differ depending on how many spaces you own in the color set or how many houses you own.

Here’s a table showing rent prices if you own one or two properties in the color set.

Monopoly SpaceRent
Pall Mall$10
White Hall$10
Northumberland$12

The rent prices pretty much doubled when you owned all the properties in the color set. These are the rent prices if you own all three but without any houses or hotels.

Monopoly SpaceRent if You Own All the Properties
Pall Mall$20
White Hall$20
Northumberland$24

Next, you introduce houses. This is where things start to get interesting.

ImprovementsPall MallWhite HallNorthumberland
1 House$50$50$60
2 Houses$150$150$180
3 Houses$450$450$500
4 Houses$625$625$700
Hotel$750$750$900

One of the things that is noticeable is the gap between the 1st/2nd and the 3rd properties. I personally believe this is where you get the true value for the extra cash paid. As you are probably guessing, it affects the property’s ROI.

Mortgage Value of the Pink Monopoly Properties

The monopoly mortgage value refers to the amount received when a property space is mortgaged. Remember that spaces with houses cannot be mortgaged. In other words, the houses will need to be sold first before they can be mortgaged.

As you can see from the table, the mortgage value is usually half of the purchase price.

Monopoly SpaceMortgage Value
Pall Mall$70
White Hall$70
Northumberland$80

In other words, the total mortgage value of this color set is $220. This is not excellent especially when you’re facing bankruptcy. However, it can be useful if you want to buy a property at the auction.

Chances of Landing in the Pink Monopoly Spaces

There’s no use buying all the spaces if no one is going to land on them. So, do people actually land on the magenta Monopoly properties?

Not as much as you’d like.

Monopoly SpacesOdds of Landing in the Pink Monopoly Properties
Pall Mall2.7%
White Hall2.17%
Northumberland2.4%

Clearly, the odds are a lot lower here. In contrast, the orange and red properties have some of the highest odds in the game.

Cost of Building in the Pink Monopoly Spaces

A big aspect of any Monopoly property is the building costs. This can make or break your game strategy. Here are the building costs for the orange color set.

Monopoly SpaceCost of Building
Pall Mall$100
White Hall$100
Northumberland$100

The building costs are the same as the orange properties. However, the value is lesser than the orange properties. Let’s see if the expected ROI can make up the difference.

The total cost of building a single space up to hotel levels is $500. Quite cheap if you ask me.

Return on Investment with Pink Monopoly Properties

It all comes down to the return on investment in Monopoly. So, what do you get if you choose to invest in the pink properties? Here are some intriguing statistics.

Monopoly SpaceROI Without HousesROI Owning all Pink PropertiesROI with Houses and Hotels
Pall Mall7.1%14.3%35.7%-535.7%
White Hall7.1%14.3%35.7%-535.7%
Northumberland7.5%15%37.5%-562.5%

As you can see, the ROI is higher than other color sets. This also makes up for the odds that are lower.

In my opinion, this color set is very good value for your money. The leap in ROI in the 3rd property, especially, makes it appealing. While this is true, they are still second choice when compared to the orange properties.

Best Strategy To Use If You Buy the Pink Color Set

Early in the Game

The best time to buy the pink color set is early in the game. Here’s why. This set of properties is fairly cheap. You can buy all the spaces and build hotels for less than $1000. This gives you room to bid on more spaces, as well as a foundation for profits.

Honestly, if you can get this color set in and any other color set, you’re almost guaranteed victory in Monopoly. Of course, you also have to apply context. If your opponent has a similar good fortune, then it’s still up for grabs.

So, here’s the strategy- Buy as early as possible. If your opponents get one of these properties, try and haggle them out as early as possible. This will set you up for victory.

End Game

This color set is also useful in the end-game stage. This strategy should only be used when it’s taken forever to purchase all three spaces.

If you get this color set towards the end of the game, you need to develop as fast as you can. This is a risk too as this is the period of the game where you need a lot of liquidity. Nevertheless, it can be a gamesaver.

The same applies to end-game situations. You need to invest as quickly as possible. This set of properties works with almost every other color set. That brings us to the next part of this article.

The Right Blend When You Invest in the Pink Monopoly Properties

Pink and Orange Properties

The pink and orange properties are slightly better than the others. First, it gives you full control of one row of the board. If you have more properties on that row, even better.

It also gives you two color sets with extremely high ROIs, coupled with low building costs. It’s the dream of every Monopoly player. This blend works in all phases of the game. There are hardly any disadvantages.

Pink and Red Properties

I love this combo because pink properties can add a natural foundation to the red color set. However, the one disadvantage here is that the orange properties are in the middle. However, you should get high ROI and good landing odds if you choose this blend.

Pink and Light Blue Properties

This works well because they are beside each other on the board. However, you run the risk of being too affordable. This means that your opponents will find it easier to pay your rent during the end game.

This isn’t my ideal situation and should be avoided.

Pink and Brown Properties

The same problem occurs here as the brown properties are the least valuable properties on the board. It’s way too small in pricing and can see you lose the game.

Here’s the thing. Your opponent can fall into the brown properties and pay $450 for a hotel twice and get that same money by falling into the orange properties just once.

Go figure.

Pink and Dark Blue and Green Properties

It’s a good combo as the pink properties can serve as the foundation for building the dark green or blue properties. However, I have some concerns. First, the properties are two far apart. So, players can easily dodge both properties.

Developing the green or blue properties is also super expensive. It’s a herculean task if you ask me.
